When it comes to health, there are many symptoms I refer to as being “common, but not normal.” In other words, you accept that you need to suffer, not knowing that there are steps you can take to alleviate your challenges. This statement can be particularly true when it comes to menopause.


Too many women today believe that hot flushes, sleeplessness and weight gain are all “accepted” symptoms of menopause. But that’s not true.

It is entirely possible to experience a gentle transition through menopause. Providing your body with the additional support it requires in the lead up to menopause, as well as during menopause, can be key.

By medical definition, menopause has three phases.

The first phase, perimenopause, begins when the ovaries gradually produce less estrogen. Progesterone production is typically low for most women by this stage, mostly as a result of stress and hectic lifestyles. Perimenopause lasts up until menopause when the drop in estrogen levels speeds up. Menopause ‘begins’ when you haven’t menstruated for 12 months. To best support your body during this time, it’s important to embrace a calming breath-focused practice and nourish yourself with plenty of real wholefoods, minimise or avoid alcohol and to deal with emotions as they arise. It’s also important to maintain good adrenal health, as this is now the sole source of your progesterone production. Progesterone acts as a powerful anti-anxiety agent, an anti-depressant and a diuretic, meaning it allows us to get rid of excess fluid, so optimal levels are critical for our health and wellness.

As your body moves through menopause, you enter post-menopause and this is where menopause symptoms tend to finish. As your body begins to adjust to the change in your sex hormone levels, it’s important to support your thyroid gland. You may notice you tire more easily so supplying your thyroid with selenium and iodine is not only critical to feeling energised but also for your metabolism and fat utilisation capabilities.

Preparing for menopause is just as important as supporting yourself through menopause. The nutrients and lifestyle changes you make ahead of time can have a profound effect on your day-to-day health and set you up for a more comfortable transition into and through menopause.
