We all know we feel better after a good night’s sleep, but did you know our skin structurally looks better too?
Researchers have recently discovered that our internal body clock mechanisms help to regulate collagen synthesis, which impacts the integrity and strength of our skin.
The study explored the relationship between sleep/wake cycles and the extracellular matrix (ECM), a crucial structural and biochemical support system for cells throughout the body. ECM makes up more than half of our body weight, and collagen constitutes half of the ECM.
It was previously believed that collagen in our ECM was fully formed by the age of 17 and could not be easily modified. However, the new research challenges this notion, revealing that some components of collagen are broken down during the day and replenished at night.
During the day, thin fibrils within collagen are broken down due to factors such as oxidative stress and mechanical stress (wear and tear). These “sacrificial” components of collagen can be easily broken down and replenished, protecting the permanent parts of the ECM.
The key to replenishing these sacrificial components of collagen lies in deep, restful sleep.
Yet many people struggle to attain this.
If you’ve been struggling to get great rest, or feel as though your collagen replenishment needs help, we have two 100% plant-based options that may support you.
